Deli on Tverskaya |
5. April. We spend our 12 hours in Moscow
- strolling along Tverskaya Street
- buying sweet poppy seed rolls from a 19th century Deli
- waving at Pushkin and Yuri Dolgoruky on their plinths
- weaving across Kuznetski Most and to Kitai Gorod ( which means 'China Town', we are heading the right direction). Past famous Moscow hotels, a beautiful post office and the ex-KGB building.
- paying homage to the Bolshoi
- revisiting Red Square by day and
- going into the Kremlin.

Metro station ceiling |
The orthodox churches where the Tsars are buried are just as OTT as Stalin's metro. In fact the metro stations look like 1920s cathedrals to worship technological progress.
But we have another train to catch and head for Yaroslavl station where – to solemn march music blaring from the speakers – we finally baptise the squeegee and clean not just our but also our neighbour's compartment window. By 21.30 we are on our way. It's subzero outside but our train is cozily heated -with brown coal smoke instantly leaving a new layer of dirt on the window pane.
