Forbidding City more like it

Ute disguised as American tourist
Today we finally cross the moat and visit the Forbidden City. 'Imperial palace' is a complete understatement for the 72 ha large area which has over 9000 rooms. Maybe it's just as well – there must be about 10 000 locals touring the site with us.
While the north-south axis consists of all the well-known ceremonial halls and marble staircases, the actual palaces are to the east and west, including a multi-storey stage for Chinese opera!
We walk around all day looking at the most marvellous faience tiles, bronze, stone and clay animals, jade carvings & jewellery.

Although we top up with icecreams and green tea in the imperial gardens, we are exhausted by the time the museum city closes and we trudge out through Tian'anMen gate to take the bus back to the hostel.
